Congressman Andrews Announces $2.3 Million Grant to Hire 10 Officers in Camden County

Monday, Congressman Andrews announced that the Camden County Police Department was awarded a $2.3 million COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant to hire 10 new police officers to bolster public safety in Camden. Congressman Andrews has been an avid supporter of the COPS hiring program and voted to fund the program in the 2013 budget back in March of this year.

Designed to bolster community policing and crime prevention efforts, the CHP competitive grant program provides state and local law enforcement agencies with much-needed relief so that they can hire and sustain full-time officers without burdening taxpayers or their current operating budget. CHP grants are administered by the U.S. Department of Justice and provide 100 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits for three years (36 months) for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer positions, or for rehired officers who have been laid off or are scheduled to be laid off on a future date as a result of local budget cuts.

"With this grant, the Camden County Police Department will be able to hire 10 new brave officers to patrol the streets of Camden and make the City a safer place to live, study and do business," Congressman Andrews said. "Camden is a city on the rise, and these officers are no small part of the Camden's Revitalization.

Nationwide, 263 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grants have been awarded for approximately $125 million. Congressman Andrews will continue the fight in Washington to continue programs that put more police on the streets to keep South Jersey residents safe.
